We've had a long couple of days sailing. Departed Racoon Cay just at sunrise.
Fun sailing. Leslie had told me that Jeff & Jeanna on Meriwether were on their way south from Georgetown. So I was happy to hear Jeanna on the VHF saying that they were only 3 miles away, headed towards us. Neat to chat with them on the radio and maybe we'll be in the same anchorage with them soon. This video is of them as we passed each other.
I sent Jeanna that photo and she responded in kind with a nice photo of Sojourn underway!
Here are a few on Meshugga in different light.
Pretty colors in the water as we pass over coral.
We arrived at Water Cay in the early afternoon...had a nice nap.
Nicholas and Jenny picked us up just before sunset to go for a walk ashore.
Pretty sunset....
We had a nice supper with leftovers as I wasn't much in the mood to cook anything. We watched the movie Deliverance from 1972 starring Burt Reynolds. I had seen a reference to it some time ago and downloaded it because I couldn't really remember it. It is actually a pretty disturbing movie!
Up again at dawn...
The winds were predicted to be 18-20 knots, mostly on the nose. We put up our mainsail only and had a pretty good run for the first few hours. The seas were choppy though and the ride was a little rough as we were "hobby horsing" in the short wave intervals.
I heard a loud "pop" like a gunshot and the boom was obviously loose, flopping back and forth as the boat rode the waves. The main sheet had broken. Quickly dropped the sail! We managed to get hold of the broken line attached to the end of the boom and slow it's sway down. Duane carefully climbed to the roof top and tied off the boom and we brought it back to center. End of drama but engines only from that point on. Amazing, I didn't get any sea-sickness through any of that.
Going north the water gets very shallow and sandy bottom.
Meshugga sailing with shortened sail.
Arrived at Thompson Bay, Long Island in the late afternoon. Pretty tired - but we did clean up the broken main sheet. The line was pretty long and it broke just a few feet from the attach point. So it was easy to just shorten it. Early night, we'll get about to exploring Long Island with Meshugga tomorrow.
Hey K,
ReplyDelete...love the video...and I definitely remember that movie...and another disturbing one that brought to mind...Southern Comfort...kind of the same idea...I like the footprints in the sand photo too...
Love,
