Coakly Cay, Exumas, Bahamas

We had a wonderful sail from Black Point to Coakley Cay.  The winds increased from upper teens to mid-20's.

Wonderful speed surfing down some waves!

We did end up slowing down a bit - when the wind gusts were over 25 knots, we decided it would be best if we put in one reef in the main sail.

Coakley Cay is just a little limestone island about 12 miles west of Great Exuma.  We stopped here as it's the last spot that offers protection before we jump off to the Jumentos/Ragged Islands.

We had spotted a forlorn sailboat on the rocks near the anchorage so we hopped on the dinghy to go take a look.

Very sad to see a sailboat like this - the name is Desparado.....the boat is not salvageable - the keel is broken and the hull is penetrated in several places.  Not sure what storm befell this boat but it was fairly recent.

We stopped and visited with Jerry and Donna for a nice chat about the path we'll take tomorrow.

The plan is to use the last bit of stronger winds tomorrow to push us, hopefully about 67 miles to Buena Vista Cay. We will likely not have internet for a day or so.  If you need to contact us, send a message on my winlink email address.

  1. Poor boat. It was not there when we overnighted at Coakley last season.
