Just a “town day” today. The city of York has the remains of a stone wall, parts of it dating back to the Roman days around 200AD
A large amount of the 2.3 mile wall still exists and can be walked. So we spent a couple of hours doing just that.
Interesting views from the elevated walkway.
This is Clifford’s Tower, the oldest surviving part of the York Castle.
More rooftop views along the wall.
And views of the York Minster- a huge cathedral we’ll tour tomorrow.
The remains of another St Mary’s church.
And cool more recent steel bridge.
After lunch we went for another walk. Too many for me to remember the names.
We found the “Shambles” shopping area known for it’s cozy alleyways.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much shopping!!
Walking back to the hotel, more views of the York Minster.
More churches.
So many churches!!! That’s it for the day
Beautiful. Makes one wonder if all the brick and stone was found/produced locally, or brought in from somewhere. Amazing to think of the work to build all the buildings at the time they were built, and how long to build them.
ReplyDeleteWe thought the same as Kris when we were in Italy. Also amazing is the long geographical reach of the Roman Empire when one could only move as fast as a horse or sailing ship.
ReplyDeleteHey K,
ReplyDelete...WOW...all of the castles and churches...and so much walking...it looks like you're still having gorgeous weather...
Love,
