Another dreary start ….some city touring today.
And nice city street views.
I wanted to climb up Calton Hill for some city views. On the way we saw the entrance to an old graveyard. This was a tower in the corner of the graveyard but no markings to identify it. That’s true of a lot of old structures here.
Continuing the walk up Calton Hill, the city views were very nice.
The unfinished model of the Parthenon was started in 1822 as the National Monument of Scotland but was stopped due to lack of funds. Odd…
And a selfie trying to get the cityscape in the background. Oh, did I tell you it was a bit chilly?
Walking back down the hill we passed by the Holyrood Castle area.
Along the path, better views of the Holyrood Palace. It’s where the British monarch resides when in Scotland.
Remnants of the old chapel.
Beautiful views along the hike up. I know, I’m repeating myself.
Walking back down, still quite a chore.
The views really were spectacular!
Another view of the monument.
Views in various directions.
And since it was right along the way, we stopped by the Scottish Parliament building for a tour. They were not in session today but we were allowed to go into the chambers for a view. The public is always allowed (after going thru airport-like security scans).
I had “walk to Arthur’s Seat” on my list of things to do. It’s the highest point in the area marked by the red arrow. No problem!
It was quite the climb!!
Birds floating along strong updrafts.
Marker at the top!
Another view of Holyrood Palace. Last photo of the day. We were pretty tired from the hike so called it an early night. Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile tomorrow!
Hey K,
ReplyDelete...I know I already commented on this post...and I don't see it even as anonymous...neat to see the bagpipes...and such a familiar tune...maybe they always play that one...haha...that looks like quite a hike...and it does look a little bit chilly too...neat and weird about the parthenon...
Love,
T
